Skin Diver magazine numbering anomalies
There are some misleading implications aboout the numbering of the issues for the 1950s.
The first published issue was in December 1951,
and its inside front cover identifies it as Vol. 1, No. 1.
However, consider the following false implications:
- All 1955 issues identify themselves as Vol. 4, which implies Vol. 1 would be in 1952. (wrong)
- All 1956 issues identify themselves as Vol. 5, which implies Vol. 1 would be in 1952. (wrong)
- All 1957 issues identify themselves as Vol. 6, which implies Vol. 1 would be in 1952. (wrong)
- All 1958 issues identify themselves as Vol. 7, which implies Vol. 1 would be in 1952. (wrong)
- All 1959 issues identify themselves as Vol. 8, which implies Vol. 1 would be in 1952. (wrong)
- All 1960 issues identify themselves as Vol. 9, which implies Vol. 1 would be in 1952. (wrong)
- The 10th year anniversary issue of January 1962 implies Vol. 1 No. 1 would be in January 1952. (wrong)
- The 50th year anniversary issue of January 2001 implies Vol. 1 No. 1 would be in January 1951. (wrong)
I have never examined issues from 1952-1954,
so if anybody knows which volume numbers those issues used to identify themselves,
please let me know.
The above pattern suggests that all 1952 issues identifed themselves as Vol. 1,
which seems very odd, and in conflict with the first issue in 1951 also being identified as Vol. 1.
There have been some correct implications, however:
- The 20th year anniversary issue of December 1971 implies Vol. 1 No.1 would be in December 1951. (correct)
The anniversary issues should have been as follows:
- The 1st anniversary should have been on 12-52.
- The 2nd anniversary should have been on 12-53.
- The 3rd anniversary should have been on 12-54.
- The 4th anniversary should have been on 12-55.
- The 5th anniversary should have been on 12-56.
- The 6th anniversary should have been on 12-57.
- The 7th anniversary should have been on 12-58.
- The 8th anniversary should have been on 12-59.
- The 9th anniversary should have been on 12-60.
- The 10th anniversary should have been on 12-61.
- The 20th anniversary should have been on 12-71. (They got this one correct.)
- The 30th anniversary should have been on 12-81.
- The 40th anniversary should have been on 12-91.
- The 50th anniversary should have been on 12-01.
- The 51st anniversary should have been on 12-02.
The volumes should have been as follows:
- Vol. 1 should have been in 1951. (They got this one correct.)
- Vol. 2 should have been in 1952.
- Vol. 3 should have been in 1953.
- Vol. 4 should have been in 1954.
- Vol. 5 should have been in 1955.
- Vol. 6 should have been in 1956.
- Vol. 7 should have been in 1957.
- Vol. 8 should have been in 1958.
- Vol. 9 should have been in 1959.
- Vol. 10 should have been in 1960.
- Vol. 20 should have been in 1970.
- Vol. 30 should have been in 1980.
- Vol. 40 should have been in 1990.
- Vol. 50 should have been in 2000.
- Vol. 51 should have been in 2001.
- Vol. 52 should have been in 2002.
