Miss International Beach Temptress /
Miss Driftwood
One of the more interesting features of Skin Diver magazine in its early
days was the yearly Miss International Beach Temptress Contest (MIBT),
which later became the monthly Miss Driftwood of the Month Contest (MD),
both of which called for submission of photos of ladies in swimwear with
an oceanic/diving theme.

History of the contests
These two consecutive contests spanned 1959-1966.
The name "Miss Driftwood" appears to have originated from the
regular monthly feature called Driftwood
that featured humorous letters from readers, with humorous replies from the SDM staff.
Readers began submitting photos to this feature,
and soon the photos began to concentrate on ladies in swimsuits with a lot of male banter.

Driftwood logos
The SDM staff must have detected a lot of interest in this section because
suddenly in the May 1959 issue an advertisement appeared in the Driftwood section asking
for submissions to the Miss International Beach Temptress contest.
After a few years the contest name was changed to Miss Driftwood.

First MIBT advertisement, May 1959
References to both contests consisted of photographs,
advertisements, and letters from readers.
Towards the end, around 1965-1966, the contest became very sporadic,
and gaps of several months began to occur between published photos of the winners.
The last Miss Driftwood photo appeared in June 1966.
The historical calendar below shows how all these references were
distributed over time. The general pattern was as follows.
Miss International Beach Temptress (1959-1962)
Each year
the winner's photo would be published around August-October,
then a photo spread of runners-up would follow 1-2 months afterwards.
This timing drifted at the rate of one month later for each subsequent year.
The winner's photo would be the size of one full page,
whereas the runners-up photos would be smaller and all of them would span two pages.
Miss Driftwood (1963-1966)
Starting in January 1963,
following two consecutive months of published photos from the previous contest,
the contest became monthly instead of yearly,
and changed its name to Miss Driftwood of the Month.
For a few months the winners' photos were only about half size,
since they were accompanied by half a page of advertising for the contest.
