Artwork from the Whitman edition

While studying the Ape-English Dictionary in the back of this book, I decided to scan all the book's artwork, too. This book was probably the first book of significant length that I read as a child, so all the artwork has a lot of memories for me. The artwork is also significant in that it depicts the mangani species as very gorilla-like, which is a controversial issue of this novel.

Al Andersen and Jesse Marsh are the credited artists, and the cover art is signed by Al Andersen (along the left edge of the curl in Tarzan's vine).

Cover artwork

Beautiful colors, beautiful birds, and very '60s-like. I can easily imagine a '60s restaurant inside a zoo having the back cover painting as a mural on a wall, for example. Toucans aren't native to Africa, though, only hornbills. [1]
