Other symbols

A colon (:) after a symbol means to hold that sound twice as long.
A double quote (") means to stress the following syllable. (Not all the stress marks have been inserted yet in the above examples.)

Word examples

In the "word examples" columns, "(none in ...)" means that no native examples exist. Borrowed words are always exceptions.
The "other language" column shows Portuguese examples only if German examples do not exist. The priority in which these other languages supercede each other here: (1) German; (2) Portuguese.

Table specifics

The English pronunciations above are for American English, not British English.
Bolded words are examples I found by other authors to illustrate those particular phonetics.
Why are there exactly 14 examples per section? Because that is the largest number of examples I was able to find for the rarest sound (/9~/). If anybody finds any more examples of French words that use the sound /9~/, please let me know.

Abbreviations

IPA = "International Phonetic Association" or "International Phonetic Alphabet."
SAMPA = "Speech Assessment Methods Phonetic Alphabet."

Miscellaneous comments

Note the inconsistencies, lack of discrimination, and incompleteness with the Random House symbols. That is one reason why one should use the IPA system instead.
