Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)

General trivia

Supposedly in this church tower the feet of a skeleton can be seen dangling at the top of one of the scenes. The book of the film tells the background of this skeleton, and says it was a priest who was the last survivor after burying the rest of the island's population, who mostly died of disease. The open grave into which Jack falls shortly after this scene was the grave that the priest dug for himself, also according to the book of the film.

How many keys does the dog have on the ring in its mouth? When the dog shakes the water off himself on the cannibal island beach, four keys can be quickly seen, and a photo from the first film proves there were exactly four in the first movie, too.

Note that all the fireflies are gone in this second scene of the bayou at night. It might not be an oversight, though: fireflies tend to stop flying as the night wears on, and this scene might have been intended to be set later at night.

According to one IMDb member, this sword that Beckett displays and then puts away in the box is Norrington's sword from the first film, a sword made by Will. It is not Elizabeth's sword.

In the first movie they kept saying that Will was the "spitting image" of his father. But note that his father looks nothing like Will in this movie, even allowing for the difference of sea growths on Bootstrap's face.

This scene of Jack accidentally falling into an open grave differs from the same scene in the trailer. The trailer showed this scene from the front whereas the final movie showed this scene from the side.

[Z8]

This line by Will, "Time to go.", was changed from the line in the trailer, which went: "Never mind, let's go." Some people think the new line sounds phony.

[Z9]

According to the commentary on the first film, this "snip-snip" line was left out of the first movie.

Some viewers have noted that Elizabeth never drinks anything while at Tia's shack, which leads to the speculation that Elizabeth may be pregnant. However, in the 1700s the effects of alcohol on fetuses were probably unknown.

Jack's expression "time and tide" comes from the old expression "Time and tide wait for no man." One reference:

The actual film location of the beach where the 3-way duel takes place is Exuma, an island in the Bahamas. Gore Verbinski mentioned this on "Behind the Scenes" that was on Starz in July and August 2006. Verbinski also talked what a nuisance it was to film those scenes because the film crew had to be extremely careful not to leave footprints in the shot other than the actors'. The film crew had to move around mostly in the water to avoid making footprints.

The song Gibbs is singing is "Yo ho ho and a Bottle of Rum" [7-15-06]. Gibbs is singing the first verse, which goes:

Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
The mate was fixed by the bosun's pike
The bosun brained with a marlinspike
And cookey's throat was marked belike
It had been gripped by fingers ten;
And there they lay, all good dead men
Like break o'day in a boozing ken
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

Most likely this famous pirate song is where the title of the film came from.

One contributor noticed the biblical origin of Jones' quote about awakening the Kraken.

"Let no joyful voice be heard! Let no man look to the sky with hope!
And let this day be cursed by we who ready to wake... the *Kraken*!"
--Davy Jones

"Lo let the night be solitary, let no joyful cry be heard in it.
Let them curse it who curse the day who are ready to awake the Leviathan."
--Book of Job 3:8

[Z101] Monkey Island

Note that this scene with Tia's shack is much like the PC video game Monkey Island, by Amiga, where a lovable pirate gets advice from a voodoo lady who lives in a swamp. Supposedly that is because the game Monkey Island is also based on the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Disneyland.

Monkey Island game

The POTC2 scene where the crew is floating to Tia's shack is almsot identical to the scenes in Monkey Island 2, and the shack interior looks much like it always did in Monkey Island 1-3. In the game the woman was a fat voodoo lady who is more easily understood, though. Also, in Monkey Island 2, Guybrush gets to the voodoo lady's hut by sailing in a coffin.

In Monkey Island 3, Guybrush (the main character) visits the voodoo lady in the swamp for advice. In Monkey Island 2, Guybrush wears the same outfit as the commodore (from the first one) and has a beard. Throughout all three movies, Guybrush battles the undead minions of Lechuck and his pirate crew (skeletons).
